Contending for Hope
Matthew 25 Gathering 2023

···
Bon Secours Conference  & Retreat Center
Marriottsville, Maryland
October 16-18, 2023

There is an irrationality to hope. The data wants to predict an end that follows the expected paths of entropy. When all is dark, why would we think light is possible? When brokenness is so severe, seemly total, both personal and systemic, how do we even face such grimness?

Christ-following justice and mercy workers are hope-contenders. We ground ourselves in a vision that is more beautiful than what can be seen. The hope we fight for is gritty, practical, and sometimes hourly. And while we choose it, we also have to cultivate it. Join with others who are grappling with some of the darkest intractables into which we believe light can break through.

Matthew 25 Gathering 2023 will center around:

Contending for Hope: Holding limitations while believing the impossible

This Gathering has an emphasis on rest, retreat, refreshment. Join us in Maryland as we gather as a North American Anglican community doing justice and mercy, contending for Shalom!

Plenary Speakers & Emcees

Liuan Huska

Liuan Huska is a freelance journalist and writer at the intersection of ecology, embodiment, and faith. She is the author of Hurting Yet Whole: Reconciling Body and Spirit in Chronic Pain and Illness, a book weaving memoir, theology, and sociocultural questions. Her reflections on living with limits, with the constraints of our creatureliness apply to all work among vulnerable and impoverished communities in our own contexts. The needs are great; our resources feel few in the face of desperate situations; our own capacities emotionally and physically slow us and overwhelm us. What does it mean to live from a place of radical hope in a God who battles for the broken? How do we understand the goals of his kingdom, and the manner and pace of bringing about that kingdom?

Bethany Hanke Hoang

Bethany Hanke Hoang engages leaders around the world with the critical connection between biblical justice and spiritual formation. She has authored two books exploring this connection: The Justice Calling (with co-author Kristen Deede Johnson) and Deepening the Soul for Justice. Bethany served with International Justice Mission (IJM) for more than a decade as founding director of biblical justice initiatives such as the Global Prayer Gathering and the IJM Institute. In recent years, she has served as Senior Advisor for Strategic Communications at the U.S. Department of State's Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons and now serves as an executive advisor to global justice-oriented non-profits, including IJM. Bethany will be speaking about how Christ's invitation to abide in Him enables us to respond and join the work of justice God is doing in our midst. When the obstacles seem impossible and we are overwhelmed by the magnitude of suffering, how might we yet persevere -- with great hope -- and even lead others well into the joy of the Kingdom?

Jake Stum

Jake is the Executive Director of the Anglican Relief and Development Fund (ARDF). In partnership with the Anglican Church of North America, ARDF helps resource disaster responses and development projects around the globe. He is passionate about helping the local church engage the world in a healthy way. He has been in the field of community development for over a decade with experience in both domestic and international contexts. Most clergy aren't trained in technical "Community Development" principles; however, as Anglican we believe these practices bring about the most significant social transformation as the gospel is lived out incarnationally.

Benjamin Wall

Benjamin is the "theologian in residence" at Redeemer Greensboro doing work on the intersection of disability, mental health, and Christian faith. He has been a professor at several institutions of higher education and was a mental health professional for 10+ years. He authored Welcome as a Way of Life. Mental health-- emotional wellness, grappling with learning differences, disabilities, and the way that our whole persons interweave with complexity-- is not only the challenge of all our M25i ministries, but also is the work we must practice on ourselves as the "givers," as the ones "ministering." How do we understand these categories? What best practices might be available to us as we navigate a globe that is profoundly struggling with a sobering mental health crisis?

Herb Bailey

Rev Capt Herb Bailey serves with Church Army USA as the Pittsburgh area director as well as Executive Ministry Director. He serves incarnationally among the vulnerable in prison ministry, recovery and advocacy outreach, with those experiencing homelessness, and speaks to our times with extraordinary skills in reconciliation and resolving conflict as he bridges many communities. Captain Bailey moves back and forth between the streets and the parish, unafraid of tangled messiness and skilled at creatively offering solutions with gentle, strong, Christ-like challenge and care.

Christine Warner

Christine Warner is the Executive Director of ACNA's Matthew 25 Initiative which dreams into and helps generate works of justice and mercy among the vulnerable, marginalized, and under-resourced in Canada, Mexico, and the US. To be Christ and encounter Christ is her greatest goal as she herself stands among the weak and vulnerable as a victim-survivor of life altering traumatic events.

BREAKOUT SESSIONS [Limited Selection]

Read the session descriptions below and list your top three in order of preference. Use the letters "A thru K" to indicate your choice as it appears in the list. For example, "C" corresponds to the session, "The Ecosystems of Societal Injustice."

NOTE: Several sessions have filled; we will do our best to place you in sessions you request

A) “In it for the Long Haul” Long term sustainability
The challenges of global injustice can be overwhelming. The pain is real; the violence dark. Many well-intentioned Christians get burned out. What can you do to stay in the game? Spiritual formation can fuel our response to God's call to justice--from the inside out. What spiritual practices can be honed on the frontlines of the fight for justice--guideposts for an inward journey that can propel a disciple outward, empowering the difficult work of justice? Seeking the God of justice can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and deeper personal discipleship. Discover spiritual disciplines for the justice-seeker and renew and invigorate your own journey.

B) Best practices for parish outreach and mission: Practical Church Strategies
Clergy and parish staff care about loving the poor, but are often overwhelmed with all that it takes to care for all parish needs. Those doing the work through non-profits or outreach projects feel they are often on the frontlines alone and there are not enough workers for the harvest. How can parishes, clergy, practitioners, volunteers come.

C) The Pain of politics: how justice & mercy have been co-opted by politics
How do we avoid the extremes? Opt out altogether (head in the sand) or conflating parties and identity. What does it mean to be a biblical Christian engaging social structures, policies, binary voting options that have no nuance? Reform is needed in the arenas of all M25i work; what do we do about it? What does polis/being a citizen mean as a follower of Jesus? Practical steps, not just emotional concepts.

D) Beyond the Soup Kitchen: Offering Transformational Strategies for those Experiencing Homelessness
How to walk alongside the chronic Homeless - work with city governance, housing first, models of ministries that might also be parish based? Those living rough on the street temporarily or for many years, are individuals who have been caught at the cross-section of many forms of poverty. Most are stuck. Most parishes feel overwhelmed by what to do besides support a non-profit in the area either financially or through volunteers. What might be a community based approach alternative that can be small, doable, and scalable? What might friendship among those experiencing homelessness look like?

E) Dynamics of culture, ethnicity, and race: How do we talk about these topics now?
This conversation has become so fraught, but our heart is to become reconcilers and bridge-builders. What are foundational concepts that can take us quickly from 101 to 801? What are some key cultural competencies and helpful peace-making language? What practices need to be in place that offers gentleness and challenge? All of this topic will be based on biblical theological foundations

F) Welcoming the Stranger: Immigration and Refugee Care
82.4 million men, women and children are forcibly displaced in the world. 30,600 people are newly uprooted every day. 41% are children. About half are women and girls. And this is OUR story as we a Migrant People in the kingdom of God. How can we welcome with vigorous hospitality? This workshop will give parish-based practical recommendations of how to mobilize a parish of any size.

G) Art + Beauty + Justice
Shalom is the biggest story of God. As we plant our feet in the midst of our world's suffering, he invites us to engage our imaginations for the sake of communicating the kingdom gospel while also nurturing our souls. A professional art therapist will lead us through an art session as a form of reflection, refreshment, and joy. This workshop offers a contemplative, prayerful experience.
